Student Board Representative Elections
Congratulations to Geronimo LaHood who with support from Aidan Gillespie and Fern Ashby has been elected to the position of Student Representative on the Wellington High School Board.
We would also like to commend the efforts that all candidates put into their election campaigns.
What’s Happening?
Inaugural Student Board Rep Debate
Prior to election date and the subsequent result, the Library hosted the inaugural Student Board Representative debate and what a spirited debate it was. The speakers, Fern Asby, Frank Monastra Woods, Owen Jones, Zakia Goddard, Florence de Bres and Max O’Neill introduced themselves, their party and what they stood for. Then they answered questions expertly prepared for them by Chair,Caspar Levack. The crowd was supportive, respectful and enthusiastic! There was a terrific turnout, with late arrivals struggling to find seats in the packed library. What a great example of democracy in action.
Mosque visit (Year 12 English with Religion)
Earlier this year our class visited the Buddhist Monastery in Stokes Valley and the Sikh Gurudwara in Naenae; this week we visited the Wellington Islamic Centre in Kilbirnie. We were hosted by the wonderful Laila (whose son attended Wellington High a few years ago) and Tariq. Our students were, as always, curious and open-minded, asking great questions and engaging with our host with a warm spirit. Thank you to these students!
Food Tech
We have been very privileged to have a number of industry professionals and guests share their knowledge with our Senior Food Technology classes this year. This has inspired students to create and trial a range of techniques and ideas to kickstart their product development.
This term a 17 person delegation from Hawaii, made up of representatives from the Senate, Department of Agriculture and Education, Leeward community college and Leilehua Secondary school visited WHS to see how food technology is taught in NZ schools.They were very impressed with the maturity and creativity of our students. A big shout out to MPA who welcomed the rōpū and performed for them.
At this point in the year we would like to thank the many people that have been supporting our Senior food technology students in the development of their food products. We have been truly privileged to work with Tulavati from our canteen, Nicky Boughtwood from Kaibosh, Prue Isaacs from the International Department, Zoe Lloyd from The Beach House and Kate Necklen from Wonderland Chocolates. All of whom have shared their expertise and enthusiasm for food with our students.
Achievements
Wellington High Music Soars
From rock to harmony, Battle of the Bands and the Unplugged Concert have showcased the incredible growth and diversity of Wellington High’s music programme. From rock bands to Kapa haka, jazz, and orchestral performances, students have excelled in both performance and behind-the-scenes roles. These events, significantly student-led, reflect the passion, creativity, and teamwork that define the vibrant music culture at our kura. We are proud of their efforts and excited for what’s to come! Battle of the Bands
Last Sunday, Wellington High’s Battle of the Bands rocked the city at the iconic Meow venue. With over 150 tickets sold and 14 incredible student bands lighting up the stage, the event was a huge success! Even more impressive, our students took charge of technical and production roles – from publicity to crewing, stage management, sound desk, and lighting.
A massive thanks to Arts Staff involved as well as Meow for being so approachable and allowing our students to dive into this rich, exciting learning experience. Their guidance and support truly made the day unforgettable!
Unplugged Concert
On Tuesday evening, Wellington High held its much-anticipated Unplugged Concert, showcasing an incredible evening of diverse musical talent. The event was well-attended and managed superbly by Arts Staff and students. This time, the spotlight was on our Kapa haka group, jazz combos, orchestral ensembles, and more, bringing the house down with their stunning performances.
The night reached a magnificent crescendo as staff and students joined forces for a powerful, unforgettable rendition of Carmina Burana, filling the venue with soaring harmonies and a shared sense of community. A special thank you to everyone involved in making this evening such a remarkable celebration of music!

2025 Wellington Trades Academy
The Trades Academy offers students the opportunity to study 3-4 subjects at school as well as do two days of Trades related courses every week.
