The Wrap Up (Term 3, Week 1 2024)

Jump into the first week of Term 3 with a visit to Parliament alongside the Neurodiversity in Education Coalition. Check ‘mate’ our chess success and congratulate our He Kakano students who recently competed in an annual ten pin bowling competition for Athletes with Disabilities. All this and more in this week’s Wrap Up!

Important Dates

  • Wednesday 24 July: Senior students’ parents evening 2.00-5.00pm. School will close at 1.20pm for all students. 
  • Monday 29 July: Junior students’ parents evening 2.00-5.00pm. School will close at 1.20pm for all students. 
  • Monday 12 August: Careers Expo (years 10-13 – 11.00 – 3.30pm) and Future Focus evening (years 10-12). 3.45-6.00pm. 
  • Friday 23 August: Mid-term break – school closed. Massey/VUW Open Days and a variety of other Private Tertiary providers.
  • Monday 19 August: Board meeting 6.00pm.
  • Wednesday 28 August: Learning Conversations for students in years 12 and 13. 
  • Monday 9 – Friday 13 September: Derived grade exam week. Corequisite and DCAT exams.
  • Monday 16 September: Board meeting 6pm.
  • Friday 27 September: Term 3 ends.

Junior Parent Teacher meetings – Monday 29 July

There is still time to book a meeting with Junior teachers for Monday’s parents’ evening.

The Light Project 

Last term, we arranged for The Light Project to present an online workshop for whānau on young people and porn in Aotearoa. Many whānau attended and shared some really positive feedback. Links to information from the presenter, Nikki Denholm, have been shared with those parents and caregivers that registered an interest in this but here they are for everyone: whānau and youth and porn.

What’s Happening?

Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University Pasifika Roadshow

Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington has extended a warm invitation to attend their upcoming Pasifika Roadshow Information Evenings taking place across the Wellington region in August 2024. They are working together with the Mayors and City Councils in our local communities to provide support for our Pasifika  peoples and their aspiration to undertake university studies and are encouraging all ages and families to attend.  They will be offering comprehensive information about the diverse range of study options available, including the various faculties and degrees, scholarships, academic and learning support and pastoral care they provide. They also look forward to listening to and discussing the viewpoints and aspirations of our Pasifika communities regarding university education.

Below you will find the dates, times and venues of the 2024 Wellington Pasifika Roadshow Information evenings:

  • 1 August – Porirua – Pātaka Art & Museum, 17 Parumoana St, Porirua (6-8pm)
  • 6 August – Levin – Horowhenua District Council, 126/148 Oxford St, Levin

Neurodiversity Hui at Parliament

Student Abel Christie attended the Neurodiversity in Education Coalition Hui at Parliament on Friday 28 June. Abel spoke directly to Labour Minister for Education Jan Tinetti.  He really enjoyed the experience.

Achievements

Chess Success

Welly High put forward three teams to the regional chess competition. All three teams represented the school well and had a great time. We also came away with a top qualifying team for nationals and a ‘top of board’ award so congrats them especially. We look forward to putting a team forward to nationals and continuing to play chess socially on Wednesday lunchtimes.

Sport

Athletes with Disabilities (AWD)

Ākonga from the He Kākano community competed in the annual AWD Ten Pin Bowling competition at the end of last term. We had some strong teams carve up the lanes with multiple strikes. Senior ākonga Balsa Vuckovich did an outstanding job supporting his peers with techniques and encouragement.

 

Careers

We have a number of Year 13 students who will be leaving us at the end of this year. In this week’s Careers Newsletter we have included information to support and guide students.  One website in particular that offers tips on how you can help your young person make study and career decisions can be found here.
