The Wrap Up (Term 3, Week 2 2024)

Get your Hollywood glamour on for the WHS Ball. Connect with your community via The Youth Impact Project and learn more about the new safe social hub for youths in central Wellington. Celebrate world class wins in underwater hockey and make informed course decisions by visiting the upcoming Careers Expo and Future Focus evening. This and much more in this week’s Wrap Up.

Important Dates

  • Saturday 3 August – WHS Ball (Massey University Great Hall).
  • Monday 12 August: Careers Expo (Years 10-13 from 11.00 – 3.30pm) and Future Focus evening (Years 10-12) from 3.45-6.00pm. 
  • Friday 23 August: Mid-term break – school closed. Massey/VUW Open Days and a variety of other Private Tertiary providers.
  • Monday 19 August: Board meeting 6.00pm.
  • Wednesday 28 August: Learning Conversations for students in years 12 and 13. 
  • Monday 9 – Friday 13 September: Derived grade exam week. Corequisite and DCAT exams.
  • Monday 16 September: Board meeting 6pm.
  • Friday 27 September: Term 3 ends.

Important Information

Careers Expo and Future Focus – Monday 12 August

You and your student are invited to Wellington High School’s Careers Expo (11.00 – 3.30pm) in the Riley Centre and Future Focus event (3.45 to 5.45pm) on Monday 12 August in the Main Block. The Expo and the evening sessions will help your student make smart course choices for 2025 and beyond.
There are two main parts to this day:

1. Careers Expo in the Riley Centre: Mon 12 Aug 11:00am – 3.30pm

2. Future Focus Evening – M Block Levels 3 and 4: Mon 12 Aug 3.45pm to 5.45pm.

 

Sport and Cultural Photos -Thursday 15 August

This year WHS Sports and Cultural photos will be taken on Thursday 15 August. The venue is the Riley Centre and the photo schedule can be found here.

Sport uniforms – Students must bring their full sports uniform. For summer sports, students must bring their uniform if it is the same as their winter sport. Otherwise, a uniform will be provided.

What’s Happening?

Coming Soon – A new Youth Hub for Central Wellington ‘Te Tai Ohinga’

Some of our students have been involved in an exciting new youth hub development in central city, which has officially been named Te Tai Ohinga.  Our Year 11’s attended an informative assembly this week, which our Year 12’s will benefit from next week.   This hub has been designed as safe space for 13-18 year old youths, to connect with their community, take part in activities and just hang out.

The Youth Impact Project

Do you want to make a positive impact and feel connected to your community? The Youth Impact Project has been recently launched by Volunteer Wellington and is all about empowering youth through volunteering. Please check out our new website which has an exciting variety of roles, stylized specifically for youth aged 14-20 years old. Whether you want to gain some work experience, help a good cause, meet new people, develop leadership and life skills, gain your Duke of Ed award or plug your skills into meaningful mahi aroha- this is a perfect platform for you to find great opportunities! Achievements

Capture the Flag

A number of WHS students formed teams to participate in a CTF, or Capture The Flag, cybersecurity event. It was online for the first weekend of the school holidays so it was in their own time. University and school teams participated from both Australia and New Zealand. One of our own WHS teams consisting of Rune Nicholson, Luka Scott, Theo Frazer and Elijah Michel placed first in NZ. This is an outstanding achievement, especially given the complexities of the competition. Their efforts were also rewarded with some well earned prize money.

International News

The International department welcomed 25 new students this term from Germany, Brasil, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Japan and Norway.  Fortunately the weather was dry so we all took a trip up to Mount Victoria, a walk through town via Pukeahu Park and a fish and chip lunch at Prue’s house due to the welcoming winds of Wellington!.  The duration of their stay varies from 1 term to a full academic year.  That makes our total of students this 56 so far with another 3 students to arrive by Term 4. 

 

Sport

CMAS 6th Underwater Hockey Age Group World Championship

Maddy Murdoch’s NZ U19 Women’s team won their bronze medal match and you can watch the game here. Congratulations Maddy. We are incredibly proud of you. You showed the way to success with the hard work you have put in to earn this medal. The NZ U19 Men’s teamz, including former students Oli Necklen and Fin Necklen, are world champions after winning their final (same link but start at 5:30:00 in the video to watch their game).  Full results are here
