Important Information
Report feedback – senior students
Senior reports were emailed to you at the end of Term 3. At the same time you received a link to give feedback on the way we report to parents at WHS. We would really appreciate you filling in this form as it will help us identify if there needs to be change to our current reporting.
If you are the parent or caregiver of a Junior student, we will be asking for your feedback later in the term, when you receive the final report for the year.
Save the date: Senior prize giving assemblies and Celebration Evening
If you are the parent or caregiver of a senior student, please save the date! We will be running prize giving assemblies for Years 11-13 on Friday 27 October as follows:

Parents and caregivers are welcome to attend and are asked to complete this form to help with planning.
On Monday 30 October, we will be celebrating our Year 13 class of 2023 at our Senior Celebration Evening. Parents and caregivers are invited to attend and to book (free) tickets at: https://www.trybooking.co.nz/PXD.
Further details will be sent to parents and caregivers of all our senior students during the week commencing 16 October.
Yearbook payments
The 2023 magazine/yearbook is under production at the moment. If you have not already paid for your copy ($20) and would like a copy, please pay at Student Services or make an online payment before 31 October 2023.

What’s happening?
The Shonas
The Wellington High Media Academy hosted the first ever Shonas. Part film festival, part Flannel launch, part awards ceremony.
We celebrated the incredible mahi of our Media, Moving Image Culture and Journalism students by watching the top films across year 11 to year 13 and selling the first copies of The Flannel.
Students and whānau got to walk the red carpet, get photographed in a photo booth by our awesome student paparazzi, make their own lolly bag to snack on during the movies, and see our incredible writers, designers and film makers celebrated with awards at the end of the night.
The awards were presented by external judges including author Emily Writes, film director Jonathan King and former Wellington High journalism students, Mary Maughan, Jessie Davidson, Francesca Georgia Pietkiewicz Nutsford and Bella Maresca.
The award winners were:
- Best feature writer: Bella Das and Holly Bowman
- Best magazine design: Olive Aldridge
- Best year 13 opinion piece: Nīkau Edmond-Smaill
- Best year 11 and 12 opinion piece: Ruby Oliver
- Best horror film (Year 12) – Jed Timmins and Ruan Smith
- Best documentary (Year 13) – Dina Mitchell, Amy Schoenborn and Mia Schoenborn
Library Concert invitation
The Music Department is putting on a special concert in our school library on Monday 16 October. It will feature performances from a range of groups including the string ensemble, wind and brass ensemble, choir, chamber music, and jazz combos. There will also be performances of original songs from some of our talented singer-songwriters.

Library lunchtime talk
Past student, poet, writer, composer and classical singer Cadence Chung visited to talk to our students about being a young writer in New Zealand. She shared tips for budding writers and also read some of her poetry. This talk was filmed as part of a series of stories about the influence of Katherine Mansfield on young New Zealand talent and may air on Newsroom NZ and RNZ in the future.
Arts
In July this year ten of our art students were selected to participate in The Wellington Students Art and Design Exhibition in Sakai, Japan. The Wellington City Council, Wellington Sakai Association and the Sakai City Government created this opportunity to showcase young artists and designers and promote the sister city relationship with Sakai. Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau visited Sakai on 23rd September and opened the exhibition.
He Kākano
It’s the beginning of Term 4 and ākonga are ready to go. We started the term with the senior cooking class making macaroni pasta aimed at easy meals ākonga can prepare when they’re flatting. Juniors are in workshop building a fold-out stool making word banners in Literacy.
Sports
International Fencing success
Nolan Peterson (Year 13) has been busy fencing over the school holidays. He competed in the Oceania Cadet (U17) Fencing Championships in Tahiti. He won gold in both the Men’s Epee Individual and the team event. He then went to Hawkes Bay to compete in the Central Open Championships and placed first in the Men’s Epee event. Congratulations Nolan.
