What’s Happening?

A kura buzzing in a blur of creativity and collaboration!

As we reflect on an exceptionally busy and creatively enriching term, the pride we feel for our arts facility and talented students is overwhelming. This term has seen our Year 12 students shine brightly on stage with their outstanding productions of ’12 Angry Men’ and ‘Daughters of Heaven’. Both performances were a testament to their hard work, dedication, and passion for the dramatic arts.

Our Music Evening was another highlight, showcasing an impressive variety of musical talent across our school community. From the harmonious voices of our choir to the beautiful arrangements of our string quartet, the exciting rhythms of our jazz ensemble, and the energetic performances of our rock and metal bands, the evening was a true celebration of WHS musical diversity and excellence. Here is the music evening photo gallery.

Capping off this remarkable term, the Blank Canvas Exhibition opened last evening and is a stunning display of visual art created by both students and staff. The creativity and skill evident in every piece were truly inspiring, reflecting the vibrant artistic spirit that thrives within our school. There is a chance to pop into the school tomorrow morning to see the work and even purchase a treasure to take home and enjoy.

We are immensely proud of our students and staff for their remarkable achievements this term. Their dedication and creativity continue to enrich our community and set a high standard for creative excellence. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making these events such a resounding success. Here’s to more inspiring moments in the terms to come!

Achievements

National Youth Orchestra selection

Shout out to Evie Patterson, year 12, for her selection to the National Youth Orchestra (NYO). Evie plays Double Bass in the orchestra which comprises 85 musicians aged 25 or younger. Following a week-long workshop, the orchestra will be performing their Victory programme, featuring works by Khachaturian and Prokofiev, at the Michael Fowler Centre on Friday 5 July. With tickets starting at $10 it is a great opportunity to hear the NYO live, or can be live-streamed at 6.30pm.

New Zealand Secondary Schools Choir

Congratulations to Lias Morris (year 13) who is currently en route to China with the New Zealand Secondary Schools Choir. Lias has always been a singer and sang with the Wellington Young Voices choir before being selected as a bass for the NZSSC.

Hebe Productions

Wellington watch out! Hebe Productions created by former WHS students Cadence Chung, Lewis Thomson and Hazel Perigo-Blackburn has landed. The company’s first run at BATs was a production of Cadence’s play Hector a duologue in which Hector Berlioz, renowned French composer, and Hector Wong, Chinese Wellingtonian find themselves in a room together, trying to find commonalities between their radically different lives.

Cadence is well-known to many in Wellington. In addition to presenting on RNZ Concert, Cadence is soloist for Capital Choir and the Festival Singers’ Vivaldi Gloria at St James Church, Lower Hutt on Saturday 6 July, and has had a line from one of her poems Everything that moves, moves through her, selected as the title of an anthology heralded as a landmark collaboration for writers of mixed heritage.
